Woman admiring her Skin

Did you know the climate conditions of where you live can affect your skin? Depending on the weather, you may need to adjust your skin care treatments to protect against the elements. Similar to how you wear different clothing in different seasons, skin care products should also be switched up as the weather changes. Maybe you find that your skin tends to be oilier in the hot summer months and drier when the winter weather sets in. If so, it’s a good idea to avoid using a warm-weather moisturizer in the winter. Instead, opt for hydrating face creams to protect against dry skin. Essentially, your environmental conditions will tell you when it’s time to change your skin care routine.

Seasonal Skin Care Tips

As autumn approaches, consider transitioning to a cleansing oil, rather than a traditional face wash. This will help prepare your skin for the cooler, drier weather. In the winter, stick to using your cleansing oil, but change to a heavier moisturizer. In the spring, you will want to use a lotion that is ideal for sensitive skin, and for summer, keep it light with base products that provide exfoliation to rejuvenate your skin. These types of cleansers will help you remove all of the oils and sweat that build up over the summer months.

Autumn is the perfect opportunity for your skin to recover from the summer sun, chlorine and saltwater. Here’s what you should and shouldn’t do to keep your skin looking healthy and hydrated as we head into Fall:

Do’s

  • Exfoliate and moisturize. Apply moisturizer following your bath or shower to help replenish the skin with water and essential oils.
  • Protect your lips against the sun’s UV rays to avoid dry, cracked lips in the winter.
  • As the air gets cooler, use cream instead of lotion. Creams provide more hydration and help prevent oily skin.
  • Don’t forget to moisturize your hands. Dry and cracked hands during the winter are a common occurrence. By moisturizing your hands now, you can enjoy soft hands all winter long.

Don’t

  • Don’t be fooled by the cold weather and shorter days. Continue to wear sunscreen to protect your skin from UV rays.
  • Don’t use too much moisturizer. This can result in clogged pores and wasted product and money. Your skin can only absorb so much moisturizer.
  • Don’t wait more than 60 seconds after cleansing to apply moisturizer.
