Waxing Vs. Laser Hair Removal Treatments: Which is Better for You?

Perhaps one of the most painful methods of hair removal, waxing involves using strips of wax to pull the hair follicle out of the root, eventually causing the hair to grow in finer. Though hot wax is a quick and effective way of removing unwanted body hair, not all skin types may benefit from this type of treatment. More sensitive skin types may experience negative side effects that can alter the skin permanently.

On the other hand, laser hair removal uses a beam of laser energy or heat to penetrate the unwanted hair root. This permanently damages the follicle and prevents it from growing new hair. Each treatment plan depends on the individual’s hair type and may require between three to eight separate sessions every two months. It’s highly recommended that you have a professional esthetician complete the procedure to ensure it is done safely and accurately. Unlike waxing, one of the biggest advantages of laser hair removal is its ability to rid the skin of ingrown hairs.

The Disadvantages of Waxing

  • A reduction in skin elasticity – A long term waxing side effect, skin can lose its elasticity and suppleness.
  • Can cause wrinkles – Frequent waxing can increase your risk of wrinkle formation.
  • Can irritate the skin – A common side effect, many users develop skin irritation and redness soon after waxing due to a chemical in the wax called calcium thioglycolate.
  • May cause rashes, bumps, bleeding and bruising – These side effects typically occur with those who have highly sensitive skin.
  • May result in skin darkening and burns – Overheated wax can cause reddish brown spots and burns, which usually appear as a result of post-inflammatory pigmentation.
  • Can cause a skin infection – This can occur when infected or unclean waxing products are used for the procedure. It’s highly recommended that diabetic individuals avoid waxing, as their skin is more susceptible to skin infections.
  • May result in allergic reactions – This can occur when individuals have a product allergy. People with sensitive skin can also develop boils in the waxed area. Be sure to visit your dermatologist if you develop an allergic reaction.

Begin a Rewarding Career with Practical Skills in Laser Hair Removal Training

Laser hair removal may be a better option for your specific needs, as it can target dark, coarse hairs while preventing the surrounding skin from becoming damaged. It can also take little to no time to treat many hairs simultaneously. For example, small areas like the upper lip can be treated in under a minute. Large areas, like the legs, can take up to an hour.

Those looking to learn more about the laser hair removal industry can benefit significantly from the hands-on, practical experience and in-depth training available through Canadian Beauty College. We offer several laser hair removal programs including our Laser Technician Diploma, Training and Theory Certificate and Laser Hair Removal Practical Certificate. Students have the opportunity to work closely with clinical instructors to perfect the treatment protocols and use the technology safely and effectively.
